Armored shelter for Americans in danger. Built before the disaster.

X=42 builds permanent, armored emergency shelters for the people a national disaster hits hardest. When the danger passes, the building keeps working. It takes in the next people who need it most and helps them climb into the middle class.

Each facility: $25 million, 2,880 residents. US first. Built to support FEMA, emergency managers and first responders, not replace them.

The problems we help fix

  • When disaster hits, the only options are a crowded stadium, a jammed highway, or staying put.
  • The people with no car, no gas money and no family to call get hurt first.
  • When the emergency shelter closes, a lot of them have nowhere to go.
  • Homeless people, veterans and people leaving prison get stuck at the bottom with no ladder.
  • Temporary fixes get paid for over and over and leave nothing standing.

What X=42 does about it

First, we protect the most needy: people in danger during a national disaster. The outer wall is designed to stop a .50 cal round.

Then each facility adapts to the next most needy. Homeless people. Veterans. People leaving prison. They get a safe place to live, structure, training and ten years of support while they move into the middle class.

It's voluntary. Nobody is forced in. Who gets the next chance comes down to merit.

Built for moments like these

An older man and a family sitting beside a packed car and a small tent in a parking lot at dusk
HomelessnessA private, safe home with a locked door, not a car or a tent.
A mother holding her young child on a cot in a crowded shelter hall
Unsafe sheltersMoms with kids get their own secure space, not a cot next to strangers.
An elderly woman reading a letter at her kitchen table beside stacked moving boxes
Seniors priced outStable, affordable housing when rent outruns a fixed income.
Flooded neighborhood street after a hurricane with a small boat
Disaster displacementHurricane and flood shelter already standing close to home.
A wildfire burning on a hillside above a neighborhood at dusk
WildfireFiltered-air shelter ready before the smoke reaches town.
Empty shuttered city street with a face mask left on a bench
Pandemic & quarantinePrivate units with filtered air let people isolate safely.
Power transmission towers silhouetted over a city during a blackout
Grid failure & EMPHardened shelter with its own power and water when the grid goes down.
A grocery aisle with nearly empty shelves and a lone shopping cart
Supply chain & food insecurityStored food and water when ports and shelves go empty.
A support group in a warm community room, one person comforting another
Addiction & mental healthA stable, sober place to recover with support close by.
A man walking out through an open gate onto an empty road at sunrise
Prison reentrySomewhere to go besides the same streets, with structure and work.
A veteran carrying a duffel bag walking toward a job site at sunrise
Veteran & job transitionStructure, housing and real work for those coming home.
A learner at a laptop in an evening training class
AI job displacementHousing plus hands-on retraining for the jobs that come next.

Shelter that's already there when you need it.

It started as Survivor Storage: storage units built so cheap they could be armored into disaster shelters, with shelter free for every customer. Twenty-plus years on the same problem turned it into X=42.

Who we are

How we do it

Basic common sense. Physics. The regulations as written. Off-the-shelf parts. No miracle tech, nothing that needs a decade of research. We're solving threats coming in the next few years, not the next few decades.

$25Mper facility

One standardized design, reviewed once and built the same way everywhere. That's how we get emergency speed and scale, legally. Here's how →

Who we are

A decorated Army combat logistician who watched Katrina and lived through Rita, and decided somebody had to fix this.
